Work descriptionWe propose to perform a hand auger boring. The auger is manually advanced by rotating the shaft of the auger. The auger is withdrawn at short intervals for inspection of soils collected in the auger head. Soil samples are taken at intervals in the test boring. We will be hand augering using 4 inch diameter augers (B-1) to a depth of 15 feet. We will perform DCP tests in accordance with ASTM D 6951 at intervals in the boring excavation. The DCP test is a drop hammer test where you record the number of blows it takes for a 15 pound weight falling 20 inches to drive the conical tip 1 ? inches. We typically perform 3 successive tests. We consider the second and third values. The first value is considered to be "disturbed." After drilling B-1 is complete, we will install a 2 inch diameter piezometer in boring B-1. The piezometer will be constructed with 5 feet of 0.020 slot well screen and sufficient solid casing to extend approximately just below the ground surface. The piezometer will be completed inside an 8 inch diameter curb box that will be concreted in place. To facilitate removal of the piezometer in the future, we will not backfill around the PVC pipe. After drilling, all soil will be containerized in one 55 gallon steel drum. The drum will remain onsite.
